Our friends’ little boy, Conner, turned 6 recently, and we took Addison over for some cake and ice cream. She had a great time around all the kids although we didn’t put her in the pool since there was so much going on. She did, however, enjoy some ice cream with Mommy outside.

Super Bowl Party

We went to our country club for the Super Bowl this year. We usually go every year, but I wasn’t as excited about this one simply because I thought the game was going to be a blowout. Well, that shows you how much I know. The game turned out to be closer than we expected, and the New York Giants actually pulled out a last minute win over the unbeaten New England Patriots. When the final whistle blew, my buddy Jamie and I literally sat and stared at each other in disbelief.

The worst thing about the Super Bowl is it means the end of football season. Now we’ve got to wait till the Fall so we can start all over again. Maybe if I get lucky I can beat Jackie in fantasy football next season. Of course, she’s won two years in a row so that’s not likely either. Then again – the Giants did win the Super Bowl – so anything’s possible.

Halloween Casino Party

Evey year for Halloween our friends Brian and Laurie throw a party at their house. It’s always a Casino night with a specific theme, and all the money spent goes to the United Way. This year’s theme was the 70’s. Jackie and I waited until the last minute to get our Halloween costumes but managed to put together some 1970’s disco fever attitude. John Travolta? He’s got nothing on the lime green, crushed velvet shirt! And of course Jackie had to rock the afro while sporting a “Little Miss Sunshine” t-shirt.

There were 3 kinds of casino games at the party. Our friend Mark brought over his craps table, and we also had blackjack and poker. At the end of the night, prizes are given out to the three people with the most chips. Usually I stay at the poker table all night with a little bit of blackjack mixed in, but we decided to hang out at the craps table for the whole time. I’m glad we did, because Jackie was raking in chips all night. I have to take credit for rolling the dice, but Jackie was making money hand over fist on the table. At midnight Brian called “time”, and everyone counted their chips. Jackie had over 13,000 in chips and came in third place. That’s my wife!

Panther Parents Celebrity Golf Classic

The first Panther Parents Celebrity Golf Classic took place in Heber Springs, AR on June 22. I was invited by a friend of mine to play in the tournament. It was the first golf tournament I had ever played in so I was extremely excited. The proceeds from the tournament were to go to help underprivileged children in the area. Panther Parents sponsors children in need and provides books, clothing, personal hygiene products, and other necessities. I was talking to one of the organization’s members who told me they had identified 13 children in the local area who did not even have running water. Through donations associated with events such as this tournament, Panther Parents had managed to provide running water for 10 of those 13 children. Panther Parents is a true grass roots initiative. They depend on word of mouth and the dedication of various figures in the community such as the Sheriff, Judges, and the Mayor.There was also a “Stud Muffin Auction” the night before the tournament which I was able to attend (NO, I did not get auctioned off). There were about fifteen “studs” being auctioned off ranging from prominent community members to the Mayor himself. The studs were to perform two hours of manual labor for the winning bidders. The auction lasted about 3 hours, and I had a great time. It was a lot of fun to watch these grown men play the crowd and try to open up the pocket books. I don’t know the exact figure, but we guessed they raised around $5,000 that night. I was really amazed at how successful the auction was.

The next morning we teed off at 8 AM. We played a four man scramble, and our other 2 team members turned out to be great guys and decent golfers as well. We were all on our game that day and were feeling great about our play once we finished the round. My friend called me a 2 days later and told me that we actually took third place in the tournament! I certainly didn’t expect for us to do so well, and it was really cool to have my first tournament be such a fun and positive experience.
